The SOSA Consortium is Setting the Standard for Interoperability in Advanced Sensor Systems

DornerWorks Joins The Open Group Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA) Consortium

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, Aug. 27, 2019 – Like the GPS in your new car and the duct tape that held the muffler on your old one, defense-focused R&D has driven significant technological innovation the world has seen in the last century. Embedded technologies are enabling even greater capabilities at reduced SWaP and cost. Today, networked sensor systems are becoming standard equipment for modern aerospace and defense platforms. Mounted on the exterior of a ground vehicle or aircraft, these systems can keep warfighters safe and informed on the front lines. However, as these systems become more complex, they can be a challenge to easily integrate with other system components.

What could benefit aerospace and defense developers is an accepted standard for developing sensor systems, just what The Open Group Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA) Consortium is building.

The SOSA Consortium enables government and industry to collaboratively develop open standards and best practices to enable, enhance and accelerate the deployment of affordable, capable, interoperable sensor systems. As one of its members, DornerWorks, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., joins other government and industry organizations in creating open system reference architectures applicable to military and commercial sensor systems and a business model that balances stakeholder interests.

Standards developed by the SOSA Consortium standards will:

  • Reduce development integration risk, time and cost
  • Support capability evolution and mitigate obsolescence
  • Enable interoperability and technology transition

DornerWorks brings years of technical experience working with sensor systems, reducing SWaP and cost in embedded devices. The FPGA-based video streaming demonstration DornerWorks is bringing to the Future Airborne Capability Environment™ (FACE) and SOSA Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) in Dayton, Ohio, shows how FPGA IP enables real-time video mixing and streaming on the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC. Four separate video streams are brought in over a single DisplayPort interface. The streams are scaled and mixed with a software-defined video overlay using a video mixer with alpha blending and windowing. The resultant video stream can be output over HDMI, DisplayPort, HD-SDI, or a custom analog FMC. The stream can also be compressed and encoded using the Video Codec Unit (on the ZCU106, for example) and sent deterministically over Ethernet using DornerWorks AVB IP.

The Xilinx board also runs the Virtuosity™ OA hypervisor, which is certified to The Open Group FACE™ Technical Standard. Virtuosity OA helps companies kickstart development on mission critical software components. and in the fast-moving aerospace and defense market, save time and resources.
